@Nayn Yes, they are utterly disrespecting Tomo in this incident. In fact they skipped her input totally, as if she didn't even exist, they didn't just ignore her. Consequently she took it understandably hard, but being Tomo, she didn't really know what to do about it. Jun is supposedly pretty smart (academically), but in some ways he's as dense as tungsten. But of course they are still young, so when an adult tells them something, they don't necessarily stop to think it through and evaluate if it makes any sense. |

@Kaarme but that old-fashioned thinking was precisely one that made a woman a prize or even a thing to be sold (for valuables or more often political influence), depending on culture. By asking Jun to fight him for approval, Gorou is disrespecting Tomo's agency. By valuing his approval in this matter, Jun is validating this, and so also disregarding Tomo's agency. |

@Nayn Maybe taken out of context it would seem like it's making Tomo a prize, but I don't see it in this context. It seems more like to make sure Jun is worthy. Old-fashioned thinking, but then again, that's how mankind in most cultures operated for thousands of years. It's just a modern thing that young people get together without their parents having anything to say about it, especially so with daughters. In fact they could have started to date just fine, I reckon, but moving together, let alone marrying, might have strained their relationship with Gorou if he hadn't been consulted. Jun wanted the bear killer's approval and respect. |

@Kaarme thing is if he's going to meddle in his daughter's dating life at all, it should be to guarantee she's safe and happy. Making it a martial contest is nuts and does set her up as a prize. @miyako19 But she is being set up as a prize. A prize for Jun, if he can prove his manly worth in battle. That the one he's facing is her dad just is irrelevant. They love each other and none of them has any circumstances or issues that would make their relationship dangerous or otherwise inadvisable. |

@Nayn Saying she is a prize is really wrong since one of them is her dad. This is more like Gorou is over-protective and wants to test if Jun is worthy of his daughter. |

Can we just get to the part where Tomo beats her dad and tells him she doesn't need a man that can protect her? |

The writer is not even trying |

@Psychronia Probs something like that. It'd be pretty clever of the author if he'd make it so "Jun can't lose in front of Tomo", just like Gorou "can't lose in front of his wife". |

@Nayn More like Gorou doesn't want to let go of his precious daughter (I'm sure he would love grandchildren, though). Other than that, maybe he is, surprisingly enough considering his lack of wits, hoping to really make Jun the next head of the dojo as well, using this opportunity to push Jun to his limits. |

Or, he could just date Tomo anyway. Modern weaponry's made Martial Arts (and melee weapons) obsolete in serious lethal engagements anyway. They're mostly for impromptu self defense situations and sporting events now anyways. Even then, skilled use of a technological device (including firearms, sprays, tasers, batons, etc.) can lead to victory anyways vs. a more physically capable opponent. Not to mention the biggest deterrence to would be attackers: society. Other people, security guards, police officers, cameras and GPS's everywhere (including smartphones) and basically the fact that if you cause trouble, you WILL be filmed and tracked, and a LOT of people with guns (who know how to use them) will probably track you down. The most dangerous "martial art" nowadays is having money and fame. The safest people aren't the strongest, they're the richest. Especially those who are rich, and also well known. |

For real though, my prediction is that Tomo is involved in the win somehow. Either she fights along with Jun, or beats dad herself. Because at the end of the day, Tomo is a prince of her own, not a lady-type damsel. Which was kinda the premise. |

Imagine that Jun wins after a brutal training arc, failed battles, and retraining arc, all that pent up frustration once that Jun wins is gonna be relieved explosively, I'm concerned that Tomo won't survive. |

I srill wonder why the hell Jun is legitimizing this stupid idea. And why Tomo doesn't give them both a piece of her mind. The idea that he must fight over her like she's some prize to be awarded is utterly ridiculous. |

He didn't say he couldn't challenge him with a taser/elephant tranquillizer |

This mini arc sure is dreadful. |

Either Jun is going to re-challenge him so many times he eventually cracks, or Tomo is going to kick the crap out of both of them. |

Noone said he's only allowed to challenge the bugger only once.. And we all know how stubborn he is with anything he puts his mind to, be it training, acting like a tree or acting like tomo aint a romantic interest. =p |
